Bobrisky to Regain Freedom from Kirikiri Correctional Centre on August 5, 2024

Controversial Nigerian cross-dresser and social media influencer, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, is set to be released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on August 5, 2024, after serving a six-month sentence. This information was confirmed by an impeccable prison source and Bobrisky’s lawyer, Ayo Olumofin.

Bobrisky was sentenced to six months imprisonment on April 12, 2024, by Justice Abimbola Awogboro for abusing the naira by spraying it at various social events. The sentencing followed his guilty plea to four counts of naira abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The offenses, which included spraying naira notes at parties, were committed between March 2023 and December 2023.

Bobrisky's appeal against the conviction is still pending, and it is unlikely to be heard before the expiration of his jail term. His lawyer, Olumofin, who appeared in court for the allocution, indicated that he might not attend the release due to other engagements outside Lagos. He mentioned that other lawyers might represent Bobrisky during his release.

The charges against Bobrisky detailed several instances where he was seen spraying naira notes at social events. The EFCC's prosecution counsel, Suleiman Suleiman, provided evidence of these activities, which included videos and witness testimonies. Bobrisky admitted guilt, expressing regret and ignorance of the naira abuse law during his allocution.

Bobrisky’s lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, confirmed the release date, stating, “Yes, it’s about that time for him to be released. There is nothing specific that would be done during his release. I might not go. I’m engaged outside Lagos. Maybe other lawyers will go.”
