Protest: Give Us More Time, FG Begs Nigerians

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that it will resolve the issues that have led to the proposed nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, aimed at addressing the country's economic hardships.

Various groups and individuals have been mobilizing for the protests in response to the ongoing economic difficulties faced by the nation. In reaction to these plans, George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, held a closed-door meeting with ministers on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the concerns of the protesters to maintain peace and stability. "We have discussed issues of national interest and all of us are working for Nigeria. We hope and believe that Nigeria is going to be great again," Idris said. He assured that the government is not taking the situation lightly and that efforts are underway to resolve the issues promptly.

Idris described the planned protest as a "family matter," highlighting that all parties involved, including those in positions of authority, are working towards the common goal of a peaceful resolution. "Those who are agitating and asking for protests are Nigerians, they are our brothers, they are our sisters. This is a Nigerian family issue, and we hope that peace will prevail at the end of the day," he added.

The government has been actively engaging with stakeholders and organizers of the proposed protest. Idris noted that the President and other government functionaries have held several meetings with key stakeholders to address their concerns.

Responding to statements by prominent Nigerians, including constitutional lawyer and human rights activist Femi Falana, SAN, who insists the protests must proceed, Idris acknowledged the importance of differing opinions in a democracy. "He (Falana) is an individual. This is a democracy; everyone is entitled to his opinion," Idris said. He reiterated the government's appeal for calm and a peaceful approach to resolving the issues.

Idris emphasized that the President is working tirelessly, along with his ministers and all government officials, to address the concerns of the citizens. He urged Nigerians to remain patient and give the government more time to implement solutions. "The President's message to all citizens is to calm down and give him more time. Everything they asked for, all their pleas will be answered," Idris assured.

The government's appeal underscores its commitment to listening to the grievances of the populace and finding amicable solutions to ensure peace and stability in the country.
